Sometimes inspiration comes from looking at piles of old paintings. I found a series of colorful abstracts from a couple years ago and decided to add some collage materials on top of the paintings just to see what would happen. In the above mixed media work (“Play It Again”), I started with an abstract background that I had painted on an 11×14 canvas. Next, using Golden soft gel gloss, I pasted on a sketch from a life drawing session. When that looked incomplete, I pasted on a rose which was cut from wrapping paper. Finally I brushed ultramarine blue watercolor over the shirt area and decided it was finished.

I notice that cleaning up my studio prompts ideas. Forgotten paintings look different after the passage of time and just might be reconfigured to form something completely new
