Lucency & Eclipse, Kathy Collins, 22x15, 2015 -It’s Mother’s Day and I am doing exactly what I love—painting! But lately that has also involved cutting up finished watercolors and gluing the bits of paper onto other watercolors for a type of collage. For this painting (Lucency and Eclipse) I took two similar works depicting water scenes and sliced one into vertical strips. Then the fun part began!  I tried various placements of the paper slices onto the 2nd painting until I had a pleasing arrangement. I considered composition, values, focal area, etc. but also some trial and error was involved.. Finally, using “Yes” paste, I attached the pieces, trying to be careful not to let paste ooze out from the sides of the narrow strips of paper.  This technique seems to work best when the two paintings are similar in color and composition.

I’ll be teaching this process in a “Slice and DIce” collage workshop June 25th at the Eastside Daniel Smith store (see “events”)
