A Bit Perplexed, 22x15, 2017

For months watercolor sticks were sitting around in my studio yet I never used them. Then one day a few weeks ago I picked them up for no particular reason and started drawing. The sticks applied smoothly to the watercolor paper, like crayons, and felt good in my hand, so I tried re-drawing some figure sketches from life-drawing sessions.

Next I picked up a big flat brush and began applying some of my favorite bright opaque watercolors–red, lavender, orange, black–just for fun. The paint and water blurred some of the edges made by the watercolor sticks, and introduced a softness to the overall composition.

Recommendation:  try a new method of applying paint — it’s just a piece of paper!
